The “San Diego MetALD Conference: Opportunities and Challenges in Biomarkers and Clinical Drug
Development” will bring together leading experts to address critical aspects of dual alcohol and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MetALD). The conference will focus on standardizing the assessment of lifetime alcohol use and metabolic risk factors to ensure consistent identification of MetALD. Attendees will review potential biomarkers for MetALD, examining their role in assessing alcohol use, steatosis degree, and fibrosis stage.
In addition, the conference will discuss comprehensive management strategies for MetALD, emphasizing
lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, and potential surgical interventions. Current research
methodologies will be evaluated to recommend the most effective protocols for steatotic liver disease
(SLD), including selection criteria and endpoints. Identifying research priorities will be a key objective,
aiming to highlight areas needing further investigation to better understand MetALD’s pathophysiology,
assessment, and treatment. The conference aims to promote collaboration among hepatologists,
endocrinologists, researchers, and other healthcare professionals, promoting a multi-faceted approach
to enhance MetALD management and improve patient outcomes. The conference proceedings will be
developed into a manuscript and published in a peer-reviewed journal.
